Immigration Legal Advice & Referral Clinic

About the Clinic

To address the growing need for legal immigration services in the District of Columbia, the D.C. Bar Pro Bono Center, along with many partners, sponsors a quarterly Immigration Legal Advice & Referral Clinic to provide free consultations to area residents.

The clinic provides legal information, brief advice, and referral services through volunteer attorneys to individuals with civil legal problems governed by U.S. immigration laws. Bilingual attorneys and interpreters are available for clients who speak a variety of languages. Visitors are encouraged to bring all documents concerning their legal issue to the clinic. All services are provided free of charge.

If brief service is not enough to resolve the problem or if a different type of service is required, clinic volunteers will refer individuals to another legal or social service provider for further assistance.

Volunteer Opportunities

The Pro Bono Center welcomes active barred attorney volunteers to complete client intakes and provide brief legal advice and information. All attorneys will be supervised and mentored by expert immigration attorneys. Expert mentors can volunteer if they are currently practicing immigration and have been for at least 3-5 years. We especially need volunteers who are fluent in Spanish, Amharic, French, Mandarin, or another language. Training, mentoring, sample pleadings and other resources are provided.

Clinics typically take place in person in March, June, September, and December in Columbia Heights. Volunteers arrive by 9 a.m. and remain until the last client is served, usually between 2 p.m. and 3 p.m.

The next Immigration Legal Advice & Referral Clinic will be held on Saturday, June 1, 2024.

If you are interested in volunteering with the Immigration Legal Advice & Referral Clinic, please contact Managing Attorney Jenadee Nanini.
